Structural Engineer

Canvas Engineering Ltd.

About the job

Hi! We know you don’t want to read another boring job ad, and we really don’t want to write a boring one either! We aren’t a big stuffy corporate office, and we don’t think you’re looking for that. So, let’s get cut right to the center of the Cadbury Cream Egg!

Our small business is located in downtown St. Catharines, ON. We are completely biased — but we are pretty sure we are the coolest place to work at, ever. And we really believe that we are changing the industry.

Let’s get the BAD news out of the way first:

Our office is on the first floor, and there is a lot of sitting at a computer required. So you won’t get any amazing views of the city, or cardio walking up flights of stairs every day – sorry! Okay, so that part is maybe not the worst, but there are a few other negatives.

You’ll have to do site visits often, which means, unless you bring your packed lunch with you, you’ll probably end up stopping for fast-food, which is sooo good, but sooo bad!

We are a young, modern-age, growth-oriented engineering consulting firm, with a tech-savvy team, which means you will need to be very comfortable with adopting new technology, and rapidly changing environments.

We don’t have a luxurious or open concept office space like some of the other larger firms do, so you’ll have to do without the $500 corporate espresso machine.

This isn’t for someone new to the field. We need someone who has at least 5-8 years of experience performing structural building designs, and you may at times need to do your own drafting (we know—yuck!) but as a small office, we all wear a few hats.

Now let’s talk about the GOOD stuff:

If this is a job that gets you so excited that you would even do it for free, we would totally accept that offer from you. But if you prefer compensation (and we totally get it…we prefer getting paid as well) this is what we offer: This is a Structural Engineering position with focus on building design – the starting annual salary range is between $72,000 – $78,000.

Again, we’re biased, but we think the work is fun, fresh and dynamic. We have a small team, so you will be working with everyone on a variety of projects and support.

We aren’t big on stress. So, while we will expect you to work efficiently and get things done, we focus on open communication and getting things done right the first go around.

Need to work from home? Sure, we’ll miss you, but we can do that too!

Do you have a vehicle? We hope so, otherwise you’ll be biking to job sites! And you’ll get your very own parking spot with your name on it! (ok, we won’t actually write your name on it, but it’ll be yours and you can give dirty looks to anyone that tries to park in your spot.)

You’ll also get your own bright office, with a door you can actually close, and awesome views of the parking lot. Or if you’re home office is preferred, that works too (we get it, working in PJ’s is sooo comfy).

We’re a fan of staying healthy, so you’ll get Health Benefits after 3 months. Woo!

Envisioning your retirement on a beach somewhere? Sounds amaaazing, so we can help contribute to your RRSP Plan after 6 months!

Now, let’s talk about the job and requirements:

You are a licensed P.Eng. with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) and have a degree in Civil Engineering.

You need to be the type person who gets joy out of getting things done. Every day, you will bang out a list of stuff. Cool stuff. Important stuff. Necessary stuff.

You will need to be on the phone with clients or coworkers. So, you need to have good interpersonal skills, enjoying talking with people, and giving/getting direction.

You’ll prepare structural design calculations, drawings, reports and construction cost estimates on various multi-unit residential, commercial, and industrial building design projects, to name a few.

We need you to be detail-oriented and meticulous in your design work.

You need to know how to efficiently design low and mid-rise building structures, from start to finish while (primarily) working independently. Familiarity with structural modeling software, such as RISA-3D, is an asset.

You need to be passionate about structural engineering, and want to learn and grow everyday!

In short, your job is to help the team and clients in any way you can. And to have fun at work (who wants a job that isn’t fun?!?). Our office is casual, but we do expect professionalism and punctuality. We also expect intelligence, energy, and a ‘get it done’ attitude.

When you have questions, you will find the answers with a quick yell down the hallway to anyone on our team.

In addition to being a detailed person, you must follow systems and processes, and evolve with them. In fact, just to prove that you are detail oriented, when you apply for this position, send us a quick email, and in the subject line of the email include “I want the coolest structural job” in the subject line. Yep, that’s our little trick to sort out the people who blanket send their resume to anyone and everyone, from the folks (that’s you) who are truly interested in this position.

We are looking to bring our new colleague on board as soon as possible, but we will spend the necessary time to find the best fit. One thing that will give you a BIG leg up (but is totally optional) is to send a quick video in along with your email. In your video tell us why you think you’re perfect for this job and why you will rock this position. This is purely for us to get a sense of your personality. And if you decide not to send a video – that’s ok too 😉

We can’t wait to meet and start designing with you!!
